Nurse Visit

Today Nurse Gillies came to visit.

Nurses look after people who are sick and injured.  They work in a team with doctors and other nurses.  Nurses can work in hospitals, doctors surgeries and even go to peoples houses who are not sick enough to be in hospital.  Nurses work at different times of the day and night. It is called night shift and day shift.

Nurse Gillies has two nursing jobs.  One is at the hospital where she looks after patients before and after they have an operation.  The other is as a district nurse where she goes to check on patients that are not sick enough to be in hospital.  She checks that they are ok and changes their dressings.

She wears a uniform like this:

Her Uniform
This is an old one

She as an identification badge with her name, her job name and a photo.
She has a special hanging watch that is upside down.  That is so she can look down and see the time quickly.
Nurse Gillies took some of our temperatures.  She put a thermometer under our arms to see if we are warm.  Everyone was a little cold.  It was a very frosty morning.
She showed us some dressings and put them on us.
Many dressing come in sterile packets.  Sterile packets are very clean so that no bugs are in them.

They use saline which is sterile salty water.

Nurses  uses sterile tweezers to clean sores
 Bandages

Dressings for cut skin
Waterproof dressing
Strip dressing that pulls skin together

Thank you for coming to tell us all about your job Nurse Gillies.

A Prison Officer

Mr Fong came in to talk to us about his Job.

He is a Prison Officer.  He looks after people who have made bad choices.  They are locked up in prison to help them learn to be good and to keep us safe.

He has 3 uniforms that are  the same colour as the police.

He wore his special uniform to talk to us it is called his number 1's.

He wears a belt with the uniform he wears most of the time.  It is called his residential uniform.

He has a belt full of equipment.
He has a chain for his keys so he doesn't  loose them, a holder for  his radio, a first aid kit, gloves for searching, and hand cuffs.

He showed us how he searches prisoners and puts on hand cuffs.

Road Safety Show

Dan the Puppet Man and his puppets came to talk to us about road safety.

Dan and his roster said, "Never, ever run across the road".

This boy ran out on the road after a ball and was hit by a car.

It is important to always wear a seat belt and make it click!

This boy took his seat belt off when he was in the car.  There was an accident and he flew out the window.  He was hurt very badly.  He woke up in hospital and was very sore.

This is the stop Monster.  He is red.  He reminds us to stop when we come to a road. Red signs and lights tell us to stop.

Dan the puppet man told us to Stop, Look, listen and link (hold hands) when we cross the road.

These people are crossing the road safely.
They are using a pedestrian crossing and they are holding hands.

Dan the Puppet Man was funny.  We liked his show!
